To get started building your portfolio, the very first thing you’ll need to do is go to its web address. You can always view your portfolio by typing commons.saintmarys.edu/username in your browser’s address bar. Your user name is the same as the first part of your Saint Mary’s email address — everything before the @ symbol. So, if your name is Mary Jones, your user name will be mjones01, and your portfolio site will be viewable at commons.saintmarys.edu/mjones01. Since my user name is acavende, you’ll see me using that instead in the rest of this screencast.
If you want to do any actual work on your site, you’ll need to log in and go to your dashboard. There are two ways that you can do that. The first way is to view your site, then click the “Log in” link under the “Meta” heading. (You’ll find that either in a sidebar or at the bottom of your webpage, depending on what theme your site uses.)
You can also log in directly by entering the address of your dashboard in the address bar. That address is the same as your site’s address, followed by /wp-admin. If your user name is mjones01, your dashboard’s address is commons.saintmarys.edu/mjones01/wp-admin.
Both methods will take you to the login page, where you’ll enter your user name and password, then click the “Log in” button to go to your dashboard.
Once you’re logged in, you can use your dashboard to change your site’s look, add content, and organize your materials.
The video below shows you what the process looks like:
