There are important advantages to doing most of your work using Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides:
- It’s easy to collaborate with colleagues.
- Your work is automatically backed up, and you can get to it from any computer with an internet connection.
- If you need to, you can easily go back to an earlier version of any document.
Sometimes, though, you’ll need a document in Microsoft Office format, or a PDF. Perhaps an instructor needs you to upload a document to Blackboard, or you need to format a document in a way that’s possible in Word, but not in Google Docs. You’ll definitely need to upload documents to the portfolio you create in WordPress.
Fortunately, it’s very easy to enjoy all the advantages of Google while still making use of other formats when needed. Simply go to your Google Drive, and locate the item you want. If you’re using the older version of Google Drive, click the checkbox next to the item you want, then click the “More” button and choose “Download.” Choose the file format you want, then click the “Download” button to save the file to your computer. If you select a Microsoft Office format, you’ll be able to edit your file in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, as needed.
If you’re using the newer version of Drive, click on the item you want to select it, then click the “More actions” icon at the top of your screen (it’s the item that looks like three vertical dots), and choose “Download.” Docs will download in Word format, Sheets will download as Excel files, and Slides will download as PowerPoint presentations. If you’d prefer to download the item in a different format, such as PDF, you’ll need to open it first. Then you can go to the file menu, choose “Download as,” and select your preferred format.
