Every site built with WordPress uses a theme to control its appearance. By default, your portfolio site uses the Twenty Fourteen theme. If you like the look of that theme, you’re free to keep using it.

There are several other themes you can choose from, though. If you’d like to change your portfolio’s theme, here’s how.

You’ll start by going to your site’s dashboard. Remember that you get there by clicking “Log in” under the “Meta” heading. (If you’re already logged in, the link will say “Site Admin” instead.) Alternately, you can enter your dashboard’s address directly in your browser’s address bar. That address will be your portfolio’s address, followed by /wp-admin. In my case, then, the address will be commons.saintmarys.edu/acavende/wp-admin.

Once you’re in your dashboard, choose Appearance, then Themes. You’ll see a list of all the themes that are available to you. If you’d like to get an idea of what a theme might look like on your site, choose Live Preview underneath it. If you like what you see, click the “Save and Activate” button near the top of your window. Go back to your site’s main address to see your new theme in action.

The video below demonstrates the process:
